London-based eCommerce Fulfilment warehouse, The Finishing Line, has joined a ground-breaking £1 million project aimed at revolutionizing safety and efficiency in UK ports and warehouses through artificial intelligence. The initiative, known as PALLETS (Proactive AI-powered Solutions for Logistics Efficiency, Transparency and Safety), brings together leading organizations in the logistics and technology sectors.
Led by RoboK, a University of Cambridge AI spinout, the project has secured £1 million in funding from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) as part of its ‘Accelerating trustworthy AI’ program. PALLETS represents one of 21 projects selected for phase two of this initiative, highlighting its strategic importance to the UK’s logistics sector.
The consortium brings together an impressive array of partners, including Freeport East, the University of Essex, Astron Fire & Security Ltd, the Port of Dover, The Bristol Port Company as well as ourselves. This collaboration combines expertise in AI innovation, security infrastructure, port operations, academic research, and logistics operations.
At the heart of the PALLETS project is RoboK’s innovative platform, which integrates AI technology with existing CCTV systems. This integration transforms standard video monitoring into a proactive tool capable of detecting real-time hazards and identifying operational improvements. The system is designed to set new standards in safety and efficiency across UK logistics hubs while maintaining security and privacy.
“PALLETS aligns perfectly with RoboK’s vision to create safer and more efficient industrial workplaces,” said Hao Zheng, Founder & CEO of RoboK. “We are honoured to collaborate with key industry partners on a project of such strategic importance to the UK economy.”
Early implementations of the technology have already shown promising results. Mark Burton, Head of IT at the Port of Dover, reported positive outcomes: “The early results are very positive, and we’ve gained some helpful insights into how computer vision might support our operational goals moving forward.”
The University of Essex brings crucial expertise in AI and cybersecurity to the project. Professor Haris Mouratidis, Director of the University’s Institute for Analytics and Data Science, emphasized the project’s potential to “deliver automation and efficiencies for complex environments, such as industrial workplaces, without compromising on safety, security and privacy.”
The PALLETS project, scheduled to conclude at the end of March 2025, aims to tackle significant industry challenges including hazard detection and operational bottlenecks in a secure and trusted manner. By lowering AI adoption barriers for the transport and logistics industries while improving transparency and security, the project is poised to set new benchmarks in AI-driven safety and efficiency for the UK’s logistics and transport sectors.
The collaboration represents a significant step forward in the digital transformation of the UK’s logistics infrastructure, with The Finishing Line playing a vital role in bringing practical logistics expertise to this innovative initiative.
Andy Mead, Managing Director at The Finishing Line, praised the collaboration with ROBOK commenting: “Harnessing AI camera technology within a 3PL environment will provide various added benefits to increase efficiencies and improve safety. This project will allow us to proactively identify and address operational challenges in real-time, ultimately enhancing productivity and protecting our workforce.”
